Our New Front Garden Showcase Is Coming Along Beautifully
If you’ve driven or walked past our clubrooms in recent weeks, you may have noticed something taking shape at the front of the building. What began as a stretch of tired, overlooked garden bed is now in the midst of a full transformation — one that will give our Sub-Branch entrance a welcoming feel.
A Space for Reflection and Remembrance
At the heart of this project is a new memorial, which will serve as a lasting focal point for the garden. Surrounding it will be a carefully curated selection of plantings, each chosen not just for its beauty but for its connection to military history and tradition. Among these is the Gallipoli Rosemary — a plant steeped in symbolism, propagated from rosemary bushes that grew wild on the Gallipoli Peninsula and long associated with remembrance of those who served.
The choice of plants was no accident. Every species selected for this garden carries its own story and significance, woven together to create a living tribute rather than a purely decorative feature. It’s a space designed to prompt a moment of pause — somewhere members and visitors alike can stop, reflect, and remember before stepping through our doors.
The People Behind the Project
None of this would be possible without the dedication of those who have given their time and expertise to bring the vision to life. The physical landscaping work was carried out by David Beasley, along with his co-workers Ryan and Kyle, whose efforts have been evident in the steady progress at the front of the building over recent weeks.
Their careful attention to detail has ensured that the hard landscaping — the groundwork that will support and showcase the memorial and plantings — has been done to a high standard.
Complementing their work is horticulturalist Neil Beasley, who took on the important task of selecting the plants for the garden. Choosing species that are not only hardy and suited to the site but also rich in military and historical association takes real expertise, and his contribution has been central to shaping the character of this space.
Bringing It All Together
Once complete, this rejuvenated front garden will do double duty for our clubrooms. On one level, it will simply look wonderful — a striking, well-tended entrance that reflects pride in our premises and gives visitors a strong first impression the moment they arrive. On another, deeper level, it will function as a quiet space of commemoration, a place where the significance of the memorial and its surrounding plantings can be properly appreciated.
It’s the kind of project that will only grow richer with time, as the plantings mature and settle into the landscape around the memorial.
